Hello Friends:

Alfredo Rego notes that the HP 3000 won an "Unsung Heroes" award as a
result of a recent Computerworld survey, adding "I missed this tidbit
during my serial scan of Computerworld. Shame on me. Fortunately, there
are sharp people like you who can provide the exact address so we can zoom
into it in no time at all."

Alas, I wish the glory of the 3000's heroics were available on the Web. The
article is available in part at:

http://www.computerworld.com/home/print.nsf/all/9902018D9A

But the online version is missing the mention of the HP 3000. Instead, the
HP 9000, RS/6000 and AS/400 are in the Web version as winning the "Leaders'
Choice Award," with the 9000 and AS/400 noted as repeat winners. Only the
printed magazine carries the HP 3000 mention.

The size of the 3000 installed base worked against it in the Computerworld
survey. To make the Leaders' Choice Award list, you had to be rated
(favorably or not) by at least 10 percent of the people responding in each
category. Although there were 1250 ballots returned, the 9000 won with just
44 votes. The AS/400 logged 56. To make the Unsung Heroes list, you had to
be mentioned on at least 1 percent of ALL respondents. So we can assume
that at worst, the score now stands HP-UX 44, MPE/iX 13. (It may be better
than that).

The Computerworld editor reports: "Unsung Hero awards were given to
products that showed a small but loyal core of users. They had to be
mentioned by at least 1% of all respondents (at least 13 users) and
receive perfect scores of 5 from 25% of their users."

Yes, we can all Think Positive, as Alfredo suggests. Perfect scores are the
only thing that gets you an Unsung Hero award. The top score of 5 in the
survey represents "Exceptional Value." Winning as a Leader's Choice meant
you only had to average a 3.8.

Clearly, HP and its VARs still have work to do to get the HP 3000 in enough
places to move into the Leaders' Choice Award group. There were no winners
at all in the magazine's categories of application development tools, LAN
management software, enterprise systems management software, Web
development tools and Web server software. Perhaps one of these areas holds
potential for an HP 3000 solution to emerge.

Notable: Apache's Web server got an Honorable Mention. Perhaps making a
fully-secure version of this Web server available on the HP 3000 can push
it into a Leader's Choice Award by next year.

Several list members have asked where they can send messages to let CSY
know that SSL support in Apache/iX is critical to their business. Send your
e-mail to the Internet and Interoperability manager at CSY, Ozlem Ozturk:
