Yes, it's a good thing, just like mod_php is a good thing.

Correct, at compile time.

But now that the MPE port of Apache supports external NMXL DSO modules, it
should be theoretically possible to compile mod_perl separately and then be
able to use it with a precompiled HTTPD that you don't have the source to.

I've never tried to build mod_perl.

You can ask, but I'm ROTFL at the notion that I have any free time. ;-)

Seriously, why not try to build mod_perl yourself and join the Porting Club?
Apache has been on MPE for a long time, and Perl has been on MPE for a long
time, so I think the odds look good for a simple or even trivial (or even no
modifications needed) port of mod_perl.

But my most recent use of free time was in the general ballpark though: testing
a prerelease version of Perl 5.6 to make sure it will be happy on MPE. I did
uncover one serious MPE getpeername() bug that renders the Perl
IO::Socket::INET object-oriented interface unusable for UDP sockets, and the
appropriate CSY sockets people have already been notified and were able to dup
the problem.

Still, if anybody is using Perl in UDP applications today, I'd like to talk to
you ASAP.
