IIRC, Edison was the "DC Dude".  Tesla was the AC proponent of the era.
While DC had it's advantages, transmission efficiency was not one of
them.  Thus as power distribution became a major issue, AC won the
battle.

PS - Tesla was doing things at the time that people *still* don't
understand.  Perhaps he was an alien :-)
