Thank you everyone. I think I see the problem now.
The old code had a bunch of junk which made it difficult for me to see where
the LINKAGE section of working storage stopped and started. I had placed my
"COPY TAPPI" statement following the start of the LINKAGE section. Those
variables should have been part of regular working storage, not linkage.
As I suspected, it was one of those things which should have been obvious.
But, I was temporarily blinded by the glare of 22,000 lines of legacy
spaghetti code. :-(
It will be a little while before I get the change tested (going to
lunch...). I will let everyone know if moving the COPY works. I am sure it
will.
