I bought the "Bar Codes and More" font cartridge to support the use of bar
codes on one
application on a LJ4+. You do have to code the PCL in your application to make
it all work.
In more recent printers, there is no place to put in a cartridge and you must
instead purchase
a font memory chip and install it (which I actually prefer, since it is inside
the printer and not
sitting out where anyone can walk by and take the cartridge out). If you want
any more info,
let me know.

If you are doing labels, consider this last bit a <plug> for Zebra thermal
transfer printers. The
ZPL code is extremely easy to code and most any bar code format is supported
with much more
flexibility than on the HP Laserjet and the print quality is better than on a
laser (my opinion).
The HP laserjet was forced to support bar codes through the use of bar code
fonts, but it was
definitely an afterthought and, as you found, not an integral part of the
printer.
