256x-Printers: No more ribbons by 2001 ???

We heard from a supplier, that HP will stop manufacturing ribbons for
256x Printers by 1/1/2001 (because these printers are very old and out
of support).

We have several 256x Printers perfectly working day after day, and do
not want to throw them away.

Does anyone know if this is true?
Are there other brands/manufacturers of ribbons for 256x Printers?
