How to properly define "left wing" and "right wing"....

For left wing supporters: the "left wing" are the good guys and the "right
wing" are the bad guys.

For right wing supporters: the "left wing are the bad guys and the "right
wing" are the good guys.

Isn't that helpful? I personally found it hilarious to hear the Soviet Union
and now the communists in Russia described as the "right wing". Perhaps
somebody was reading 1984 for ideas on terminology?
