I hope Allegro doesn't mind... and that reminds me... I need to talk to Steve Cooper... .anyway (Steve please call me :-) )
Allegro has a great program to see what is using the B-Tree Extent table, see
http://www.allegro.com/software/hp3000/stuff/TBLTEST.std
There is also an FFLUSH program that will flush unused entries from the B_tree table.
Defragging will help a lot. I also found that re-indexing OMNIDEX indexes really does seem to help. Re-index and then defrag.
