Choice (i) is my preference, and would make the software exportable.

My preference would be for the first option, where all material transmitted
from source to target (in either direction) is encrypted.  I realize that
there would be problems with the one or two character input, but there are
many times I have to answer security questions regarding whether all
input/output from/to the HP 3000 via terminal emulation is encrypted.
Being able to say "yes" would certainly help a LOT!.
