Not normally one to contradict Wirt, but I don't think you should have
any problems doing this, but you may need to get an operator to switch
the port setting to session rather than console. And to do so we never
alter the standard modem settings.

As we have found on several sites this year that have upgraded to "A" or
"N" class boxes, they have just junked all their DTC's. So the only
remote connection you have (if web console isn't accessible) is via the
remote support modem line.

And yes we have been successfully transferring hundreds of files via
Reflection via this route. Would normally use FTP these days but it
doesn't work over dial up.

All you need to do is to ensure that this port is set for Session rather
than Console. To do this.

At the Console CTRL B, this will enter you into the new fangled GPS or
is that GSP system, just hit return through the system name and password
options (unless they are configured) and then at the GSP prompt enter
ER. This will show you the current state of the port and give you the
choice to set it to CONSOLE, SESSION or Disabled/locked out. Take the
"S" option it should say that it is updating, and then exit GSP by
entering CO.

When you now dial in you will get a colon prompt and can login and
transfer files normally, assuming that you have PCLINK2 installed
somewhere on the HP3000.

The only fly in the ointment that we have found, or rather two is that,
on two A400's both have needed new cards before the modem would work
properly, and also there appears to be a problem with Predictive, such
that when it dials out it somehow screws the active configuration of the
modem port, so that if it is configured for Session, the modem will ring
but refuse to answer.

If you get this problem. Use GSP change the config back to CONSOLE and
exit, dial in, the modem will then answer, immediately disconnect, Use
GSP and set it back to Session. The modem port will then continue to
operate faultlessly until about a week later, when you will have to
repeat the exercise.

Now apart from the problem of convincing HP Engineers that the remote
support modem should be just that, and not just a device for Predictive
to dial out on, you should be able to transfer to your hearts content.
