I had the exact same problem with the bank.  I opened up a joint checking account and they needed my wife's signature on file.

So we put all the kids in the van and went to the bank.  When we got there my wife's driver's license expired two days prior, and they would not accept it as proof of ID.

Strangely we NEVER went back to have her sign the "required signature card"... and yet no checks were ever returned in the two years we continued to bank there.

Common sense only works when the procedures make sense.
