I heard from a friend who is attending the IBM iSeries
conference: http://www.common.org/Conferences/conf.html

HP has nothing to fear, because the Keynote speaker invested (yes,
the word "invested" is used advisedly) about 5 minutes (an
eternity, in Keynote-speak) on our beloved hp3000.

It turns out that the survey-based ratings for "user satisfaction"
were higher for the hp3000 than for IBM's iSeries (formerly known
as the AS/4000). Naturally, HP is doing everything in its power
to maintain (indeed, to increase) such favorable ratings from its
loyal MPE-Image base. It is an honor for all of us, MPE-Image
users, for our hp3000 platform to get such attention from our
iSeries colleagues (and from IBM itself).

The evidence seems to indicate that HP's latest covert marketing
strategy for MPE-Image is starting to pay handsome dividends (in
less than a year, to boot). Can you imagine how much money it
would have cost HP to get the kind of "mention in high places"
that MPE-Image is getting nowadays? Every CEO from every
important computer company is very interested in the hp3000
folks and in their well-kept secret OLTP weapon: MPE-Image.

The rise and fall (and re-rise) of MPE-Image is such a compelling
(and complex) story that I expect to see a well-done movie about
it soon. We can then add this drama to our collection (which so
far includes "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Sweet Home Alabama").

Oops, time to go to to the movies. Here is the Web site for one
of our theaters in town, about a block away from the Adager
offices: http://www.skitimecinemas.com/

You may notice that we take it easy in the Sun Valley area.
The webmaster has not updated this site since the summer (in
terms of movies), but the "mechanical" things (such as the date
and the weather) seem to be functioning just fine. Perhaps they
are using one of HP's well-publicized e-services (remember HP's
"second chapter of the Internet" initiative?). The fact that
"automatic" things keep going unattended in web sites all over
the world (in general, and in Sun Valley's smallest theater in
particular) confirms the validity of my earlier post about the
difficulty of keeping schemas in synch with RootFiles :-)

Ah... the dramas ("reality") of life and the dramas ("art") that
people make about them. I wonder what else, in terms of hp3000
plots and counter-plots, is going on at the iSeries Conference.
