Thanks to everyone who responded to the question about editting smb.conf.
Right after I hit send, I realized that I could move the file into the MPE
name space and use EDITOR, then move it back. Guenter Kuhn recommended this
approach and it worked just fine.

Now I have an issue where I cannot see the HP 3000 (MONTVALE) from the PC. I
cannot map a drive to a share, nor can I see the HP 3000 from Network
Neighborhood. The frustrating part is that I set this up at this same
customer about a year ago on their other HP 3000 (PARAMUS) and got
everything working. I lent my notes to someone and never saw them again.
Some interesting tidbits that lead me to believe that it is an issue on the
PC/Windows side:

I can see PARAMUS from MONTVALE, and vice versa, when I issue the
smbclient command, i.e.
From MONTVALE, smbclient \\\\paramus\\NOTES -N -c dir, lists
the contents of the NOTES directory on PARAMUS.
The opposite holds true as well.

If I use TOOLS-FIND-COMPUTER from Windos Explorer, the PC finds the
HP3000 that I am looking for!

I tried using the IP address instead of the name when creating a
share, still no good.

I can ping both systems via name or IP. Appropriate entries are in
'hosts' and 'lmhosts'.

One last thing, the PC, MONTVALE, and PARAMUS are all in separate
buildings, connected via routers.

I'm thinking it is either a WINS issue or a workgroup issue. Unfortunately,
PC networking is not one of my stronger points.

Thanks for any suggestions and have a great weekend!
