The question posed by Craig had me wondering - how different would things be? 

For one I don't think they could have avoided layoffs as the marketplace has become so much tougher - but nicer severance pay? Do you think there would be layoffs? 

I don't think they would have merged with Compaq. 

I do think the HP3000 would still be supported and sold and (gasp) promoted.
