OK, I guess I'm losing my mind here... The example I gave (lkml) works the same
way as HP3000-L with regards to the default address for replies. I remembered
that about two minutes after sending the previous message.

Not trying to speak for Cortlandt here, just offering a possible explanation...

I don't know whether you access these messages through the comp.sys.hp.mpe
newsgroup or the HP3000-L mailing list, but the mailing list has the "reply to"
header set to the address of the original poster, not the mailing list address.
With many email clients (like Lotus Notes, which is the one I use for this list)
a reply to a message does not go out to the whole list unless "reply all" rather
than just "reply" is selected. I generally use "reply all" and then manually
remove the original poster's address from the header so that only one copy will
go out to the list. Sometimes I forget the last step and two copies go out --
one to the list and one to the original poster. Perhaps something similar
happened with Cortlandt Wilson's reply to your message.

Personally, I'd prefer that the default "reply to" address be the list address,
like on the other lists (like lkml) to which I subscribe, but I've gotten used
to this one being different from all the others.

Why did you carbon-copy me on this message to the group? I don't
understand this sort of habit... it's not like I'm going to miss the
message if it's not addressed to me by name or anything.
