can you do a 'help sh' or even print the udc file?

well...yes. hppath is a visible/useable variable within the shell.
however, most (all?) of the posix programs are unaware of it. when
you're in the shell, it's going to use the variable PATH to search for
the command that's just been typed in. it is PATH that we suspect has
been modified to include '.'

under most circumstances, you want hpgroup to be part of your path.
what you want is to 'escape' the exclaimation point...with another !

here's how i set hppath on one of my boxes:

setvar hppath &
"!!hpgroup,pub,pub.sys,cmd.sys,arpa.sys,hpbin.sys,utl.sys"

for the curious....for certain users the path is modified even more
with:

# state syscmd twice for hfs & mpe files...
  setvar hppath "/SYS/SYSCMD/,syscmd.sys,"+hppath

and *that* is truely kewl because you can name files like you may have
only dreamed of. restart.apache really does work from the colon
prompt...no smoke...no magic...because it lives under /SYS/SYSCMD/
