There is a utility around called TAPESCAN, which will identify the 
contents of a tape - specifically, for each file found, the max. 
blockzise, no. of records, etc. it determines the presence of 
different files based upon file marks encountered.

This utility was found on the INTEREX (R.I.P.) Contributed library.

I believe the caretaker of this libaray now may be Speedware 
Corporation - or not - I'm not quite sure.
