Why "had to"? If it was because you bought one of the 9x9KS boxes, you can
still use HPIB with these boxes.

For reasons unknown to me, HP did not carry over their CIPER protocol's
intelligence to serial printers. PLR is part of that intelligence.

Whatever works for your printer is fine. The problems are not in the serial
connection, but in the software driving it.
