Walter,

The error message has been seen in the past but was not reported as a mpe 
known problem...but an application related problem. 

In the case were the error was returned unrecognized return status error: 

The problem was caused by using a shared status array for multiple databases 
where dbfinds and dbgets finished on multiple data sets, at least 2 databases, 
sometimes using mode 7, followed by multiple data sets updates without 
regetting the entries.

The problem was caused by the program's shared status array.  DBexplain got 
confused.
