Actually, I had it backwards -- as I remember now looking up the two, "The
Hellstrom Chronicle" (the movie) and "Hellstrom's Hive" (the book).
The movie was made in 1971 as a semidocumentary -- and was actually nominated
for an academy award in the documentary category (and could possibly have
won, if my memory isn't completely gone). I worked in agricultural entomology
at the time. The entire faculty and graduate student staff went to see it as
a group, although no one was particularly impressed. However, we did have a
good time and we did later film our own takeoff of it later in glorious 8mm
as "The Ellstrom Chronicle", starring Mark Ellstrom, a graduate student in
entomology. See:

Mark is the blond fellow in the cage in the Lincoln National Forest picture.
Mark is unfortunately now deceased, but the movie still lives somewhere in
one of my closets.
Frank Herbert published his book, "Hellstrom's Hive", in 1974 as another,
equally-well done takeoff of the same movie, borrowing the basic theme and
was as at least as faithful to the original theme as we were.
