Hi Chad,
You are right about salary... it only pays the bills and gives us fun
money... :)

Some things that have made me choose to stay at a non-profit (at well below
market value salary) for just over 5 and a half years....

    1. A boss that protects me from the office politics and budgets ... she
handles these things and lets me handle the tech stuff and making recomendations

    2. Excellent benefits package (4 weeks vacation/2 weeks military leave/12
sick days a year) plus work conditions that allow us technogeeks to be
"ourselves" help.

    3. An environment that facilitates learning new skills. A lot of job
hopping occurs as the techie wants to get that new job and the current one
doesn't allow for new skills to be learned.
e.g Let the COBOL programmer learn Java or VB... :)
or let the HP 3k System manager learn Netware or NT

Just some ideas :)

Speaking of black holes,

My shop is trying very hard to attract and RETAIN good quality people. I
have been asked to 'sit' on a comittee that is supposed to find new and
creative suggestions for retaining techies.

I have lots of ideas myself, but I thought many of you might give me
some of your ideas on what would make you want to stay at a company.
Salary is the easy one, but not always the most important.

Private e-mails are fine.

Thanks
