We used to joke (as a matter of fact, a LOT of people used to joke), that
"HP" was an acronym for "High Priced" (but one pays for quality ;)

Not necessarily - not unless the original purchaser paid for the SPL
compiler! Yes, SPL was a purchasable product and I do remember inheriting
machines without SPL.
