Your last sentence reminded me of a book I read more than 2 decades ago
(written, precisely, by Harry Browne). Regardless of your political
leanings, the book is a gem (and I remember it served me well during the
years of my pre-Adager life, as I was breaking free from the stifling
corporate world).

I dug up the book from one of my barn's bookshelves and dusted if off.
Here is the information:

"How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World" (ISBN 0-380-00423-2,
Macmillan, 1973, Library of Congress Catalogue Card Number 72-90549)

I just opened it at random and found this "sample" on page 200:

There's a beautiful world out there. Why clutter it up with
relationships that don't belong in your life?
It's an easy life. Why complicate it by trying to be all things to
        all people?
Adopt the image that's most effective -- your own.

Then, at the bottom of the page:

Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist.
                                        - Ralph Waldo Emerson
