I did install the GNULIBS.  Is it possible that something did not get put in
its place?

When you got and installed the gcc compiler did you also get and install the
GNULIBS package?  This is where the C++ runtime libraries are located, so if
you didn't get this package as well, then that would completely explain your
problem.
