We use a DLT with Backup+.  It works fine.  We're on Backup+ version 5.36.
However, we too have a problem backing up the directory only when using the
Online Backup feature.  Before we run BACKUPPL.PUB.ORBIT, we must SETVAR
BACKUPNONMSTORE=1 so that it doesn't try to backup the directory.  Also, be
sure to execute the command file DLTSET.PUB.ORBIT before you run BACKUPPL
so that the proper variables are set for DLTs.

BTW, we purchased our DLT drive from Orbit.
