I don't know if HP had a such product, but we use a 3 tiers
client/server solution that can maybe be of interest for you.
 
On the HP3000/9000:  1) use Speedware 4G/L.
                     2) use of DCE/RPC from HP
 
On the PC         :  1) use Visual Basic
                     2) use Speedware VBX or OCX.
 
In this configuration, using Speedware 4G/L, you can access to all the
database & plateform supported be Speedware, and also implement a true 3
tiers Client/Server configuration.  Depending on your application layer
configuration, the performance is uncomparable to the ODBC approach.
