It depends, what type of network is your 3000 connected to, if any
network at all? It would be very simple and easy to hack together a
send-only mail system if you have access to a system on the Internet, be
it dialup or full ethernet. I'm in the middle of putting together a mail
system for my MPE/V box which will not rely on LANlink or any networking
software, however you will need a UNIX host. If my scheme works as it
should, the MPE box can have it's own unique internet host mailing address,
and so should it's users. The UNIX/Internet system will be connected via
a serial port to the HP. The HP creates the mail files, then transports
them to the UNIX system, which does the actual SMTP transport of the
mail to the other system, but all mail files are already setup, so you
just have to open port 25 (telnet there by dial up line) of the UNIX host
and do an ASCII dump of your mail files. Of course, you will need to get
mail queues and special routing settings set up on the UNIX system to
handle incoming mail to the HP (ie, dump all mail to the HP into a file,
and download it to the HP). Should work quite well, in theory... :)

Hmm... you could buy a 486dx33 with 4MB RAM and Linux to serve as a mail
system for a theoretical unlimited number of users for that much, and you
get a nice menu shell interface in the Pine mail system. If it's only
him and 2 other people, the Linux box would be a better buy, unless Mail
on MPE is an absolute must.
