The same thing happened to me! However I was lucky enough to have UNIX
connoisseur working with me at the time. I recall to problem was due to some
non-standard labels that were embedded into the tarred files. So the standard
tar program wasn't able to untar. These labels were referring to MPE stuff
like record length, block factor, ascii/binary, ect..... My guess is you are
running MPE 5.0, and the GNU stuff at jazz is setup for 5.5 now. The tar
program on your system may not be compatible with the GNU tarred files
format, I am not sure. My UNIX person successfully untared the GNU files on
a LINUX system then FTP'd them to the HP3000 MPE 5.0, then manually executed
all of the instructions found in the install script. It took him a few hours
to do because of other various problems. Then when the GNU "C" compiler was
finally functional. We found that calling MPE Intrinsics was a very painful
experience. I think my UNIX connoisseur had to write some assembly code. So
HP's C/iX maybe the solution, however I haven't received my C/iX from HP yet.
The development that should have been written for the HP3000 we are
temporarily doing on the LINUX box.
