If the software can handle UNC's , then you could save a potential
maintenance problem but NOT mapping a Samba/iX share on your HPe3000 as a
network drive on each PC, but rather configuring the software to look at,
say,
\\HPe3000\account\group\posix_dir\
or something like that (however you'd configures Samba/Ix to expose the
share to the SMB world.

Assuming you are running a network, what you are proposing is fairly easy
to implement.
You would:
1. Configure and start Samba.
2. Map a network drive on each PC to one of the HP3000's folders.
3. Use that folder and any subfolders when storing and retrieving images.
The first step has a learning curve, but the documentation is good.
