I used to do the same thing but it got tedious doing it by hand.  I
suppose one could use a utility like Harmonizer to automate the process.
It always ticked me off that HP made it an extra-cost option to add this
"feature" (terse login error messages) to the OS.  Which, along with the
other things it did (like password encryption) are pretty much standard
fare on other OS's.

One of the first things I did with the XL box was to change the ":" login
prompt to "Log-on >".  In retrospect, "login:" is even more generic.
