The HP3000 can both resolve host names to a DNS server, and provide DNS
services itself.

To have your HP3000 resolve DNS, the RESLVCNF.NET.SYS file needs to be
updated with the domain name and the appropriate IP addresses for the
nameservers. There is a sample in the NET.SYS group to get you started.
Once done, restart the net.

To have your HP3000 provide DNS, you need two components, both bundled with
6.0, but downloadable from Jazz for 5.5 (and do work well). The first is
SYSLOG, which should be installed and running before proceeding. The second
would be BIND.

Once BIND is installed, there are a series of configuration files which need
editing - with an editor such as QEDIT, QEDIT for Windows, vi, or other
editor which will not terminate a line with a CR/LF, but just a LF (I
believe). These editors can tell the difference. Copying to the MPE
filespace and using EDITOR or QUAD will not work and just mess these files
up. The to be edited are in the readme docs in the package.

Once the configuration files are updated, start BIND by streaming
JNAMED.PUB.BIND. You should see messages on the console (which are provided
by SYSLOG) indicating valid and good zone transfers and configuration
records. Errors will be reported here. If you see errors, abort the job,
and ensure your config files are properly structured.

In all, you should be able to do this with 5.5 with no problems (we used
both with 5.5 here, and didn't have a problem at all). Our primary DNS
server happens to be an HP3000 -- our backup DNS is an NT server - and the
NT server pulls updates from the HP3000 with no problem. (We also have name
services with our ISP - just in case :)

HTH,
Joe
