I have sent the following email to the SIGCOBOL list. I am forwarding it to
this list in the hope that those of you who are interested in COBOL
migration, or who have customers/users who are interested, will register
with the SIGCOBOL list (via the Interex web pages).

Subject: Discussion on migration from MPE

> Hello everyone,
>
> I have been doing a lot of thinking in the days since the announcement
that
> the HP e3000 (and MPE) were going to become obsolete in the next 5 years.
My
> main concern, as chairman of SIGCOBOL, has been to help provide access to
> all the tools and products that will inevitably become available over the
> next 5 years to assist COBOL applications in this migration process.
>
> I would like to encourage all product vendors to use this list as a means
of
> getting messages out to the COBOL users. I ask them to follow the
following
> simple guidelines so they do not create unnecessary disharmony among the
> members of the list:
>
> 1. Always put <plug> into the subject line.
> 2. Restrict your message to 2 or 3 'screens' full of detail, i.e. do not
> give us the full definition of your product in the email, just the key
> points.
> 3. Always provide a URL to your web site so we can find more information.
> 4. Always provide a phone number and address so people can contact you in
> person, hopefully for demo material etc.
>
> I ask all members of this list to follow the following simple guidelines:
>
> 1. Always retain a professional attitude in any posting even if you
disagree
> with someone else's posting. We will all have different viewpoints and
> different needs.
> 2. If you have good or bad experiences with any products that are
<plug>ed,
> post your experience in as unemotional manner as possible. Your actual
> experiences will be useful for others as they try to work out their
options.
> 3. Do post your experiences or knowledge of products that the vendor may
not
> have posted. If you do not have any vested interest in a product you do
not
> have to add <plug> in the subject.
> 4. Do post questions and ideas for tools that you think your application
> will require.
>
> We do not have to panic. HP have given us 5 years of support for MPE so we
> can make an orderly migration to another platform. Let us all work
together
> to find the best possible solutions for our migration 'issues' remembering
> that many different solutions will be required.
