The article Eric Sand links us to gives a number of technical reasons why
Linux will not replace the "Proprietary Server" in the hearts and minds of
IT professionals. I am quite sure that all of them are sound. However, Big
Blue and the US government have decided to get together and bless Linux for
use in government applications. They have done so for IBM servers only and
only using SuSe Linux.
This means that the technical arguments are now moot points. The decision to
use Linux by the largest server manufacturer, IBM and the largest user, the
US government has set the juggernaut in motion. The question is not whether
others will try to jump on the bandwagon; the question is how many muscles
they will pull in the attempt.
It doesn't matter if every installation of Linux in a government
installation fails miserably. Every "C" level executive will want to go that
way because it is now considered safe. The fact that it may not succeed is
hidden behind the fact that IBM is doing it. It will be years and millions
of dollars before anyone discovers the mistake. Then it will be years and
millions of dollars more trying to convince us that the emperor is clothed.

Linux may be the best thing to happen to IT since Babbage but it is not a
silver bullet. Mr. Torvalds may be a great technician but even he never
claimed to be the Lone Ranger. Linux cannot fix everyone's problems or can
it? The O/S wars have begun and we are standing in no-man's-land.

What do you mean by "we" white man?

PS. For the humor impaired the last line in this missive is the punch line
to an old joke. Those that know the joke will understand the appropriateness
of the line's inclusion. Those that do not know the joke should ask the next
seven year old American they meet.
