Much smaller potatoes than the the Pentium situation, but to minimize "smug", I offer the
following ...

8100/80 SIMM bug bumped off
... if you're a lucky 8100/80 user,
you'll want to hear Apple's credible explanation for a problem you may be
experiencing with your system.
In the Knife's case, a fully stuffed 8100/80 seemed well worth the hassle
of being forced to practically disassemble the entire machine to install a
few lousy SIMMs. But the pleasure was soon interrupted when the power-on
diagnostics reported a RAM problem. Thus began a long trail of tears
consisting of fruitless SIMM swapping and canned-music-induced suffering.
So you can imagine his surprise when sources revealed that the problem is a
bug in the 8100/80 logic board that Apple has known about at least since

November. This glitch rears its ugly little head in some 8100/80s equipped

with third-party 16- or 32-Mbyte high-density SIMMs. The newer 8100 models
don't suffer from this problem.
