If you don't mind a little extra work, you can use the cursor movement
escape sequences.
  Csi<n>A  cursor up <n> lines
  Csi<n>B  cursor down <n> lines
  Csi<n>C  cursor right <n> columns
  Csi<n>D  cursor left <n> columns
 
There are also the following two esc sequences, but the Reflection
Terminal Reference descriptions are not too clear about them.
  Csi<n>a  horizontal position relative
  Csi<n>e  vertical position relative
