fooy! since 5.5, mpe has supported native network printing. granted it's not
a complete solution (for example, there are limits to the kinds of network
printers you can attache to) but it's free. it's works well and (imo) a good
extension to the o.s.
there are plenty of vendors selling 'more complete' network printing packages
for mpe. we happen to use espul and there's no way it could be classified as
expensive.

exactly, the old protocol is just piggish. i can't tell you the amount of
agony we used to go thru trying to support remote dtc-connect printers. we
put in network line printers about 1.5 years ago....and haven't looked back.
at some point, trying to keep old technology running just ain't worth
