Duane, when you speak of 'modern operating systems' I assume that you are not referring to UNIX (or even MPE)?  Then if true, are you referring to Windows? Or how about LINUX...no that would be just a flavor of UNIX.

Ok, I give up, what 'modern operating systems' are you referring to?   :-)
