HP CSY sendmail (shipping in 7.5 FOS, beta available now for all OS versions at
http://jazz.external.hp.com/src/sendmail/) comes with a great many parameters
for controlling performance and load balancing.

I confess that I have never attempted to send a couple of thousand e-mails with
sendmail, so I do not know which parameter defaults you would want to change in
such an environment.
