Try:

Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoFormat as you Type/Replace as you Type/

and uncheck 'Internet and network paths with hyperlinks'

Do the same for AutoFormat/Replace if you are likely to use a document
reformat.

You should also find that the Autocorrect options here can be used to
stop it correcting data names.

This information is good for Word 2000 but should also apply in Word 97.

If you were using Word 2000, I would also mention that when you drop
down the Tools menu, you possibly wouldn't see AutoCorrect, unless or
until you clicked the little double down arrow at the bottom of the
menu.

This feature was introduced after a Microsoft usability survey found
that people could still find things for themselves. Now, you usually
have to ask Links the cat. (Assuming of course, you can find the cat.
Most now people don't get past the paperclip).
