thanks to all that responded. I did replace my ":MOVE" with ";move"
and it does work.
I had previously done this with a GET and had no problems with it
removing the files on the remote server (non MPE). but the information
I could find for manuals, is kind of sparse.

we are currently using an FTP that originates on the remote server and
does an MGET @ and a del @.
this has been causing problems, because another file can get added to
the group before process is done and then that file is deleted, yet
never moved.

so I'm doing a listf, 6;*file and then reading that file with a COBOL
program generating a job stream do to the ftp, with the "move" option to
delete the files.
so if more files are added, while I am doing this process, that won't be
a problem.

my only problem could be if I don't get done with this ftp, before the
next time I run this job. I am going to do this every 3 minutes, as we
want a fairly fast response time on these files.

in case anyone cares; what we are doing is creating text files with some
special keywords that an outside service is taking and turning into an
EMAIL.
we are sending out random messages that would account for 100 or so an
hour and also a couple of batch jobs, where I stop at 750 messages in
one batch, and I currently run that process 6 times.
so far this week on Monday we sent 5,936 messages, Tuesday 6,232,
Wednesday 5,223 - and we try to send every 3 minutes so as to have a
somewhat "real time" process.

Most of these are external messages to customers and prospective
customers, with some being internal reports along with some special
EMAIL messages where we have some jobs monitoring our other jobs and if
one goes down
we send ourselves a message and also a text message to a couple of cell
phones, indicating we have some sort of problem.
