Yes, I went down that road a long time ago for a client and do not
relish having to do it again for myself. Of, this time I also would
need to configure the Linux end as well.

In a nutshell we are transitioning off the HP3000. Our edi program
with the CA Federal government updates our new system using
PostgreSQl and Ruby on Rails on a Linux host. The billing system
remains on the HP3000 for now. This is a Cognos Powerhouse
application. During the cross-over period we wish to transmit a
transaction file to the HP3000 via ftp and stream a job to update
the billing data thereon. That part works.

What I am now attempting to accomplish is make the entire process
more error tolerant. That is why I want to mount the ftp directory
locally so that I can monitor the job output without having to
repetitively run a monitor script that opens an ftp session and
transfers asynchronous semaphore files.

That is correct.
