The following was sent to Unison Technical Support on 5/15/98. (I
haven't heard back yet; but now the problem is more serious because we
upgraded our largest production system (a 995/500) on Saturday and it
has the same problem):

We are running KLA Express A.02.02 on an HP3000 928. When we upgraded
from MPE/iX 5.0 (C.50.00) to 5.5 Release 4 (C.55.00) we encountered a
problem with Express and have had to disable it.

The problem is that EXPRESS is changing the LIMIT of the circular queues
when we haven't told it to. We normally have them tuned as follows (as
they appear on the main Express screen):

CS=152,220,1,2000
DS=202,238,2000,2000
ES=240,253,2000,2000

and a :SHOWQ;STATUS command in MPE displays:

                    ------QUANTUM-------
QUEUE BASE LIMIT MIN MAX ACTUAL BOOST TIMESLICE
-----  ----  -----  ---    ---    ------  -----  ---------
 CQ    152    220   1      2000   29      DECAY    200
 DQ    202    238   2000   2000   2000    DECAY    200
 EQ    240    253   2000   2000   2000    DECAY    200

But as soon as we start Express (i.e. KLAEXPB starts running) the tuning
changes to:

CS=152,250,1,2000
DS=202,250,2000,2000
ES=240,250,2000,2000

and a :SHOWQ;STATUS command in MPE displays:

                    ------QUANTUM-------
QUEUE BASE LIMIT MIN MAX ACTUAL BOOST TIMESLICE
-----  ----  -----  ---    ---    ------  -----  ---------
 CQ    152    255   1      2000   40      DECAY    200
 DQ    202    255   2000   2000   2000    DECAY    200
 EQ    240    255   2000   2000   2000    DECAY    200

I don't know why the LIMIT is 250 in Express and the system reports 255.
I'm more concerned about the fact that the LIMIT drops to 250/255 for
all circular queues. This makes system performance absolutely terrible.

There is nothing defined in Global Parameters. I have tried adding our
standard tuning to that screen but it doesn't fix the problem. I have
also tried using no config file, with no parameters changed, even
renaming the default file so it will create a new one, but it still does
the same thing.

I hope you can help me, we use KLA for monitoring and single-threading,
so it's really putting a crimp in our batch scheduling.

Thanks,
Patrick Santucci
