After spending several days helping some unsuspecting victim, uhhh, I mean
esteemed list reader with the perl5.001 installation and setup, I discovered
that there is a subtle error in the perl5 package available on opus.  The
actual /usr/local/bin/perl symbolic link points to /bin/perl5.001 instead of
the correct /usr/local/bin/perl5.001 :-(
 
I couldn't find or reproduce the problem on my system, but I do now have a
vague memory of fixing it, but obviously it was after I made the package.
 
Anyway, for anyone else that downloaded the package, be sure to check the
link.  I may repackage the fixed one, but perl5.002 is almost here (how
Mark Klein does all this is amazing!) so there may be a replacement soon
anyway.
