I just read an article in FORBES the other week. In it they talked about
keeping the values of Bill and Dave alive. The company was of course
Agilent. They are still doing business based upon the origional founder's
'values'.
FWIW...........

Ok, I am comfortable knowing that at least you and I (and several others who
emailed me privately or responded to the post) are seeing it this way. I
agree with you about the issues of commodity items and mass markets and all
that, BTW.
We also see that Hewlett Jr. wants to shrink the business and focus mainly
(I didn't say totally, though it may well be his plans, as this was
mentioned in other news stories,) on printing and imaging because HP
generates a lot of profit from this segment. Yes, HP might be healthier
doing this downsizing, but it will no longer be the HP of yore. The
instrumentation is already gone (Agilent) and the computers, storage and
networking components are next. All that will remain are the printers,
scanners and cameras.
Somehow, I don't think that's what Bill and Dave had in mind for their
company.
Kind regards,

Right - When HP was great (and I do mean "WAS") they had very specific
product categories in which they were the technology and quality leaders.
Mass marketing of commodity items did not contribute to HP's greatness.
Frankly, the PC and WinTel server market was a good example of a market
segment in which there was never a solid reason to buy HP - and when I did
it was out of loyalty to HP and my HP Sales guy.
Even though the "lone disenter"'s plan might result in a smaller HP with
less total revenue, it would yield an HP much healthier in many respects.

So, you agree with my assessment. I am not out in left field. That's good
to know, because the situation was getting really confusing.
Kind regards,

It's clear to me too - Fire the CEO and replace the entire board.

John, thank you so much for providing the information.
So, please make sure I get this right. HP's CEO and the board (including
the past general manager for the highly successful and profitable printing
division) minus one person are in favor of the merger of HP and Compaq in
the hopes of expanding the HP universe, covering everything from the
smallest handheld system to the largest enterprise environment, providing
consulting services, storage solutions, networking solutions and clustering
technology.
On the other hand, the lone dissenter on the board wants to collapse HP
around its printing and imaging business, get out of the PC and downsize
other non-printing areas. This person also wants to immediately fire the
current CEO and probably replace the whole board with himself as the chair
so as to stack the board with people who share is narrowly-focused vision.
If I were to vote, the choice would be clear.
Kind regards,
Denys. . .
