Low-tech solution... use QUAD.  It opens the file for update and you get an
obvious warning if someone else has the file open.
 
Higher-tech solution... use QEDIT and work directly on the workfiles.  Same
result.
 
High-budget solution... get a source code control system.
 
Our solution... copy the "source" to your home group and purge the public
copy, replacing it when you're done with modifications.  Yes, it's dangerous
and all that, but it works.
