I have had the same experiences being able to write to DDS-1 tapes.

I have also had a number of tapes that I have concluded had the "Media
Recognition System" data on the tape trashed.  These tapes gave the same
write not enabled symptom.  MRS is a rocker switch option on the tape
drive. You can disable it if you want although I chose not to do so (I
trashed the tapes instead).
