I personally agree with Russ Smith its a lousy picture. (I thought it was
Andy Kaufman.) Since Duane and Jeff have known Winston longer and better
than I, I defer to them on the subject. Speaking of deferring to Duane let
me add a few comments to his excellent comments.

 1. There is a difference between a lie and an incorrect statement. Lies
presume that the teller knew the statement was incorrect or false. There are
many other reasons why a person may make an incorrect statement other than
telling a lie; mistakes, unsubstantiated optimism and unforeseen changes
come to mind.
2. The idea that Winston's membership on the transition team proves to he
was part of a conspiracy only holds up if you presume that there was
anything nefarious about the "end of lifing" the HP 3000 and even then it's
circular logic.
3. When asked to predict the future I usually answer that my father was
also not a prophet so prophesy doesn't run in genes. The same is true of
mind reading. I am, however, really envious of those listers who apparently
do have the ability to read minds and assign motivations to others.
4. It has been my finding that honest people generally have honest
motivations.
5. I have observed that the motivation we assign to others is usually what
motivates us.
6. Let me restate Duane's last comment: ... it's a total waste of time to be
barking up this tree.

The opinions expressed herein are my own and not necessarily those of my
employer.
