Or would that be "socking-wind?".

Funny, but "no", sockets are implemented at ~ layer 4.5 on the ISO
table and the "sucking-wind" problem I was referring to is definitely
a Link level problem, layer 1.0 on the ISO table //:~)
My "sucking-wind" term comes from the link level problems seen in a
past life in Illinois where it was difficult to keep ds running on
above ground telecom links. The story is: I looked up one day and
realized there were black birds pecking and chewing on the data and
voice lines to the extent that you could see the chewed cable casing
and of course with telecom links (unlike electrical power lines) there
is insufficient electrical stimuli to convince the birds to stop...
In bad weather the openings in the cables would fill up with rain
water and corrode & short out any exposed copper wire... On windy
days you would pickup whistling and crackling noise on voice lines as
the cable swings in the wind shorting the open wires together, thus
my humorous but somewhat accurate term "sucking-wind" was created.
Today I use this term to refer to any physical link level problem...
but it also happily applies to software... as an example: my peecee
is "sucking wind", time to reboot //:~)
Enjoy,
James Hofmeister
