No disagreement with Stan's recommendation;  just note that
with 128MB SIMMs for 9X9 boxes going for under $200 each
from reputable third-party vendors last time we ordered (even
for *HP* SIMMs), if you are starting with 128MB on a 9X9 you
should be able to go up to 1GB for right around $1000 or so.

We're running 1792 MB on our 959-400, and for normal
steady-state operations (i.e.:  Nobody launches a big new
query) we have almost no disc I/O....      :-)

SIDEBAR:  In addition to Stan's above "128 MB + 4 MB / user",
I've seen a few recommendations to add  x MB per processor
for every processor > 1..  I'm not technically qualified to speak
authoritatively on that, but all else being equal it does seem
logical to add some additional memory if you add processors;
even if nothing else changes....

SUMMARY:  I've seen a couple "recommendations" from
memory vendors that are pretty clearly overkill.  But unless you
are strapped for cash my "seat of the pants" guess is that even
for small-medium production systems 1GB of memory is
probably not out of line....  although clearly many systems run
fine with less than that....
