To those who are interested in M$ Office alternatives or those who need an
Office Suite for non-M$ operating systems, Star Office 6.0 Beta was released
a few days ago at www.sun.com.

I've been trying for days now and have finally downloaded the 118mb file from
a very busy server and installed it. They finally ditched that horrible
integrated desktop that plagued version 5.2, in the Linux version the fonts
look MUCH better. The load time and sytem requirements are reduced, they
claim that M$ compatibility is increased and the Star Office 6 format is now
in XML :-) (to actually get at the XML you need to unzip the file).

So far it seems to be a lot better than the previous versions and, depending
on the compatability with MS products, could hold it's own on the
professional desktop. I still need to put it through so stress tests.
